HOA Exterior Paint Approval Checklist

Everything to gather so your HOA approves your paint the first time. Print it, or save it as a PDF, and check it off as you go.

Before you submit

  • Confirm whether your HOA requires approval (assume yes until told otherwise)
  • Decide: are you repainting the same color, or changing colors?
  • Photograph your home's current colors — every elevation
  • Photograph neighboring homes if your HOA requires it
  • Get the current architectural request form (latest version)
  • Prepare color samples in your HOA's required format and size
  • Note the exact paint brand, product line, and color name/number for body, trim, and accent
  • Confirm the review timeline and the committee's meeting date

During review

  • Submit one complete application (nothing missing)
  • Track the committee meeting date
  • Respond quickly to any request for more information

After approval

  • Save your written approval letter with your home records
  • Verify the paint matches the approval exactly — brand, line, and color number
  • Schedule your project to start after approval is in hand
