The Colorado Home Exterior Maintenance Calendar
When to paint, when to inspect for hail, when to caulk, and when to move indoors — a month-by-month rhythm built for the Front Range climate. It's general guidance; your home's condition and the year's weather always have the final say.

When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Colorado?
On the Front Range, the reliable exterior painting season runs roughly from May through September, when daytime temperatures are stable and overnight lows stay above freezing. Late spring and early fall are excellent windows; midsummer works too, as long as walls aren't coated in direct peak-afternoon heat.
Can you paint a house exterior in winter in Colorado?
Exterior painting in a Colorado winter is generally not advisable — coatings need temperatures (and overnight lows) above the manufacturer's minimum to cure properly, and freeze-thaw swings work against a fresh film. Winter is the ideal time for interior painting instead.
When should I check my house for hail damage?
Inspect after any significant hailstorm, and do a broader check in spring and midsummer during Colorado's peak hail season. Look at south- and west-facing walls, plus soft-metal surfaces like fascia, gutters, and garage doors, for chips, pits, and dents. Documenting damage promptly also helps if you carry hail coverage.
When should I re-caulk before winter?
Early fall — around September — is the time to re-caulk gaps at windows, doors, trim, and penetrations, before freeze-thaw cycling can drive moisture into any open joints.
How we put this together
This calendar reflects general Front Range climate patterns and established painting practice — the exterior painting season, hail season, and freeze-thaw timing. It's a planning rhythm, not a rule; the year's weather and your home's condition come first.
What needs an on-site check
- Whether your home is ready to paint in a given window depends on its current coating and surface condition, which we confirm on-site.
- Exact timing shifts year to year with Colorado's weather.
